The Allure of the Folded Harmonica.

The paper folded harmonica, commonly known and easily recognizable, is a fascinating three-dimensional element. Its simple yet intricate design transforms a flat sheet of paper into a dynamic, expandable form. This versatile structure, often used in arts and crafts, showcases the beauty and complexity of geometric folding, captivating those who appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and its structural ingenuity.

Monika has developed a profound interest in folded structures, aiming to incorporate pleated designs into her professional work to create visually striking and structurally sound elements.

Monika is an interior designer who graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Koszalin University of Technology in 2011. Since then, she has led her professional journey through collaborations with various design offices, primarily in Milan, Italy. Engaging with the Milanese design scene had a profound impact on her visual sensibility.

Monika’s journey into the world of pleated structures began with her exploration of how these intricate forms could enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of interior spaces and architectural designs. She was captivated by the way pleats could transform simple materials into dynamic, three-dimensional forms that interact with light and shadow, adding depth and movement to her creations.

For her interior design projects, Monika focused on creating pleated bespoke elements such as room dividers, lighting fixtures, and wall installations. These features not only served practical purposes but also became focal points that defined the character of the spaces. This fascination with pleats and folds has not only enriched her professional projects but has also evolved into a significant artistic endeavor.

Monika’s interest in pleated structures soon transcended her professional approach, becoming a passionate artistic project. She delved deeper into the geometry and mechanics of folding, studying the mathematical principles behind pleated fan-like elements and their potential for artistic expression.

Inspired by this versatility and dynamic potential, Monika began experimenting with folded fan-like objects. She was fascinated by the way these folded fans could respond to modifications in the length of the pleats while maintaining their structural integrity. Attempting to enclose the traditional fan within a square frame became a puzzle that absorbed her interest.
